A lot of times, people ask me for advice on running/creating a Christian Instagram account. In order to make the explanation process easier, I have dedicated this post to that very topic. Below, I will discuss helpful information that you should know if you are thinking of making a Christian social media account or if you are a new owner of one. (Some of the tips I mention below are useful for running a blog as well.) > Username or Title Overall, I would suggest making your username simple. I know it can be difficult to find a great one that isn’t already taken, but try not to over-complicate it. Also, try to make it unique, and most importantly, meaningful to you. When I made my Instagram account over a few years ago, I decided to call it “Jesus my everything” because that meant something significant to me. You can look at other accounts for ideas and inspiration, or you can even search the Bible for a phrase/verse you like. (It's OK to go with a classic username like "God Girl" or "Jesus Freak" if you really like it.) > Biography Below are some ideas for what you could put in your account biography:
> Account Theme Some people choose to have an account theme, but you do not have to have a one for your account. I usually stick with more general themes, so I can have more freedom in posting. (The more specific of a theme you have, the more limits you will have on what you can post.) My posts usually follow the seasons: autumn, winter, spring, and summer. I maintain this theme by choosing background photos for edits that will fit whatever season it is at the time. (For example, during the spring, I mostly use flower pictures for my edits.) Besides that, I occasionally do holiday themes. (At the beginning of December, I usually start making Christmas-themed posts, and so on.) > Finding Photos “Edits” are pictures that you post on your account that you have edited by adding some form of text. For example, if you find a nice picture of some flowers and add the words “God loves you!” on it, you have created an edit. Most people make edits with that go along with their devotionals, while some just post scenery pictures (without any text added to them) and focus on writing the caption. Here’s an example of the two: So as I explained above, you can use either types of these pictures for a post. (I edited the one on the right.) You do not necessarily have to make an edit; you can just post a picture so you can spend more time writing the caption. I sometimes do this if I do not have time to make an edit. (You do not have to create an edit for every single one of your posts.) I also want to warn you all that there is a legal side to running an account like this. Since running a Christian Instagram account like the one I have been explaining in this post involves using photos and fonts that were created by other people, we must be careful what photos and fonts we use. When I first started running my Instagram account, I never thought about the legal side to it. Once these thoughts came to my mind, I almost considered deleting my account because I was afraid that I was violating some copyright laws by using other people’s photos and fonts. However, you do not need to worry, because I have discovered a solution! In this past year, I found an amazing website called “Unsplash.com”. The best part about Unsplash is that all the photos on that website are completely free to use! Photographers basically “donate” their photos to that website, and people can download photos and use them for anything without violating any copyright laws. Another great part about Unsplash is that all the photos on there are very high quality, which is very important when creating edits. You can click here to read more about the Font Licensing Information at Unsplash.com. My top three suggestions for photos would be:
> Post Inspiration
Before you edit a photo, you must think of what you want it say. You could add a Bible verse, a Christian quote, or Christian song lyrics! (These are only a few ideas.) So before creating an edit, you also need to make sure you have some idea of what your devotional is going to be about since you will be talking about whatever the edit says in the caption. I usually write about things that God puts on my heart, while sometimes I talk about my personal experiences and how God helped me, strengthened me, etc. I occasionally share what I learned from my pastor’s sermon as well. When I am looking for inspiration, I go to Pinterest and search up “Christian quotes” to get some ideas. If I have a specific topic in mind, I search “Bible verses about ________” on the internet. Once you have decided what your edit is going to say, it is time to create it!
