Most of you have probably heard the parable about the Good Samaritan before. For those who have not, it is a story about a man who gets attacked by robbers and is left half-dead on the road. Both a priest and a Levite saw this man while on traveling, but they decided to ignore him by walking on the other side of the path. Later, a Samaritan passed by and took pity on the man. The Samaritan bandaged his wounds, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
The Samaritan had mercy on the man who was left to die on the road. Jesus uses this example to teach us to mimic that same mercy when we encounter others. We too can be Good Samaritans in our daily lives. We don’t necessarily have to help a dying man to do so. Whether it’s complimenting others or helping them out with their homework, there are many different ways we can spread God’s love through our actions. In 1 Corinthians 16:14, Paul writes, “Do everything in love.” These words are a key component to being a Good Samaritan. We must remember to do everything out of love and not for selfish reasons. Besides, God’s second greatest commandment is to “love your neighbor as yourself”, and by putting someone else’s needs before ours, we can act like a Good Samaritan. 1 John 3:17 says, “If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?” Philippians 2:3-4 says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” [Also, for those of you who might be interested in reading the full parable, refer to Luke 10:25-37.]
